The new 24-70 II is 24.8 oz (805g) versus 23.6 oz (670g) of the 24-105. Previous 24-70 f/2.8 users will appreciate the drastic reduction in weight, the shorter length and the smaller hood. Those coming over from Nikon now have a 24-70 f/2.8 with the sharpness that they were used on the Nikon platform in a lighter weight lens.
In general, the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 ART’s resolution was excellent in the center of the lens. Depending on the the light and conditions, it was sometimes on par with the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L II comparison unit, though no better. However, away from the center, resolution was often quite bad. Take a look, starting at the 70mm end of the zoom range.
For an inexpensive “kit” zoom lens, the Nikon Z 24-70mm f/4 S shows amazing results. It is almost as sharp as its big brother in the center frame, but definitely loses out in the corners. The 24-70mm lens is generally offered in two variations: f/2.8 and f/4. This number refers to the maximum aperture offered by the lens: the f/2.8 version is able to use a wider f/2.8 aperture, whereas the f/4 version can only widen the aperture to f/4. As a result, the f/2.8 version can take in more light compared to the f/4 version.
At 24mm, the Canon 24-70 f/4L IS performs very well. At f/4, the Canon was noticeably sharper at 100%, though I wouldn’t call the differences drastic. However, at 50mm the tables were turned and the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC was the clear winner here. Chromatic Aberration was more noticeable in the Tamron but it was not distracting at all to my eye.

Overall, it is pretty clear that the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8E VR is a much better lens sharpness-wise when compared to the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC.
